After sharpening your shoemaker knife on a grinding stone, it is essential to finish it on a strop with polishing compound. This removes the burr and polish the blade. Only after this process, the knife has the best possible sharpness.
While working, the knife can be dragged over the leather again and again to sharpen it without having to use a sharpening stone. Stropping the welt knife and feathering knife before use is important for the best possible work result.
This strop is made by me in my workshop from 18 mm beech wood with 5 mm veg tanned leather covering. One strop site with the flesh and one with the grain leather site to the top.
Strop overall length: 36 cm
Strop leather length: 25 cm
Strop width: 5 cm
Strop overall thickness: 3 cm
The leather strop can be ordered with or without stropping compound. A usage without compound doesn´t leads to best work results.
IMPORTANT: To apply the compound make sure that compound and strop have at least room temperature. When stropping, only drag the blade over the strop.
