This is a protective sole material used to protect the leather outsole from wear. Usually, new quality and bespoke shoes where worn first time on the leather outsole. After wear is visible, it is recommended, to put on a protective sole, to prevent the shoe from resoling.
With 1,0 mm the material is very thin, but at the same time very durable. A high-quality, heat-sealed fabric backing makes this material very easy to glue.
In the pictures you can see the application. So that there is no transition to the leather sole, the leather is slightly notched and deepened at the transition.
